Early BMW 323i (E30) only 27k miles
Rare early 323i / 27,000 miles / recent major service incl. timing belt
To BMW enthusiasts, the E30 generation of the BMW 3 Series has for many years been the epitome of the “modern classic” car. While the car’s old-fashioned styling makes it a real head turner on the road today, it is still a safe, comfortable and – perhaps most importantly – very reliable car. Moreover, it is historically significant for enabling BMW to outsell rival Mercedes Benz for the first time, as it was in many ways superior to its 190E model counterpart. While many were built, very few good examples have survived on British roads, and the market for unusual specimens with rare specification is stronger than ever. The early 323i model has a unique appeal and has become particularly sought after, with only 19 specimens remaining taxed on the road in the UK.
This particular E30 is a 1983 model year 323i coupé, or 2-door saloon, as they were marketed in their day. The very well presented bodywork is finished in Balticblau metallic, which is a lovely rare colour available only on the very first E30s (ca. 1982–1984). The interior is draped in the equally rare perforated vinyl interior, in Pacific blue, which was also available only on early models. We can confidently say that we have never before seen a UK specification car with this interior. The car is modestly equipped, yet it has a mechanical sunroof in working order as well as front fog lights. The painted steel 14 inch wheels are a very period feature which add to the special appeal of the car as an early production model.
The car was first supplied by Premier Cars of Gwynedd, North Wales, in April 1983 at a total cost of £10,917; as warranted by the original purchase invoice. The car was kept by an outstandingly caring first owner until 2015, although it had been in dry storage since 2002. The original service booklet survives to show a total of 9 supplying dealer service stamps between 1983 and 2002. The history file also includes many old MOT certificates warranting the exceptionally low mileage of the vehicle, as well as a stack of historic tax discs dating back to its first registration. An exceptionally original specimen, this car is of course supplied with its original Philips radio (with electric aerial and Blaupunkt speakers), owner’s manual/book pack, floor mats and supplying dealer number plates.
In preparation for sale, the 323i has enjoyed a major service and inspection. This includes an oil service, coolant flush, spark plugs and filters, as well as the all important timing belt change. The tyres are next to new and the overall mechanical condition of the car is outstanding. It has been extensively test driven, only to find that the car handles and feels exactly as we imagine it would have when it was brand new. We are confident that this is one of the most unusual and investible E30s on the market today, capturing the essence of 1980s design and engineering. Don’t miss this opportunity to own such an exciting piece of BMW history!
