'87 Volkswagen Golf GTI - 1 owner - The 80's Hot Hatch!
In September 1983, Volkswagen launched the MkII Golf (Typ 19E) along with its booted sibling the Jetta at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was slightly larger and more refined than the Mk1, however unlike the Giugiaro designed Mk1 the MkII was designed in-house by VW's design director Herbert Schäfer, though it was clearly influenced by the Italian penned Mk1. Weight was up by a reported 120kg, but the new cars more slippery shape meant performance and economy were in most instances up on the equivalent engined Mk1.
Absolute Classic Cars are delighted to offer this beautifully presented MkII Golf GTI. Delivered through the VAG dealership, Guilders (Hillsboro) Ltd on 2nd Jan 1987, to Mr D Fellows the car has remained in his sole ownership for the last 31years, cherished all that time and is now offered to the market for the very first time!
Her original bill of sale, shows a purchase price of £9550.00 (£845.86 dealer discount applied) and indicates the car was supplied with the following specification:
1.8 litre K-Jetronic Engine (EV engine code) with 5 speed manual.
Jade Green Metallic paint (code: LN6V).
Back / Silver stripe cloth interior (code: UN).
14" Teardrop Alloy wheels.
Steel sliding sunroof.
Remote side mirror adjustment.
Folding rear seat.
Rear seat belts.
Central locking.
True to the 1987 VW advertising campaign, featuring the Golf GTI, which declared 'If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen', Mr Fellows used his GTI for the first 8 years as his daily commuter car, covering circa 70k miles before in 1994 he bought another Volkswagen, allowing the GTI to now take the role of "for best - trips and holidays" and a review of the comprehensive supporting documentation shows that in the last 18 years the car has averaged less than 700 miles per year!
Cherished and correctly maintained (19 service stamps in the original book pack, plus a folder of invoices) this lovely Jade Green metallic GTI still looks fantastic. The paintwork has a wonderful shine, great panel gaps and the exterior rubbers, side trims, wheel arch plastics etc have all stood the test of time, no nasty bleaching and with her fully refurbished 14" Teardrop alloys, the trademark twin-tailpipe exhaust and GTI badging this car just looks right.
Opening the door and the quality continues. The seats, ordered with black / silver strip cloth option are correct to the pre-facelift models and are in excellent condition. The seat bolsters remain firm and supportive with no nasty marks, tears or creases! The rest of the interior also remains in excellent condition; she has the correct 4 horn-push steering wheel, 'Golf ball' gear knob, the dash instrumentation functions correctly including the MFA, the headlining is perfect as is the rear parcel shelf (NO HOLES), she comes with a set of full set of Votex (Volkswagen option) over-mats, Blaupunkt stereo and on inspecting the boot area, its great to note that not only is the tool kit present, along with the warning triangle but that the all important Volkswagen 'build' sticker is present on the rear panel.
The 1.8 litre, 8 valve engine fires without hesitation and settles into a smooth idle with exhausts gases leaving through the correct twin-tailpipe exhaust. Since her arrival at Absolute Classic Cars we've fitted a new 3 piece clutch, refurbished the original rocker-cover and out on the open road the GTI performs exactly as expected with the 1.8 litre 8 valve engine providing smooth power delivery through the crisp 5 speed gearbox, she's just a joy to drive, hugely rewarding and surprisingly economically....always a bonus with classic car ownership!
Being a 1 owner car this Golf GTI has obviously been treasured, she comes with a fabulous history file containing invoices for £0000's, an original 1987 Golf GTI dealership brochure, price list and the all important original book pack containing the owners information manual, dealership location leaflet etc and the service book containing 19 service stamps! In addition we also 26 previous MOT certificates supporting her mileage (less than 4k miles/yr), she comes with 2 sets of keys, is fitted with a Sigma immobiliser and has a valid MOT until May 2019. Offered to the market for the very first time this wonderful Volkswagen MkII Golf GTI, ticks all the right boxes and she is looking for a new owner who will hopefully cherish her for the next 31 years and beyond!
